Cary Williams started a volunteer organization called Friends with Flowers in the spring of 2007. After retiring, she wanted to help adults in some way and read an article about an organization of the same name in North Carolina that delivers fresh flowers to hospice patients on a weekly basis. The organization agreed to share its name and logo. Cary contacted Kelly Kendall, Community Engagement Coordinator at Bluegrass Care Navigators’ Cynthiana office, and they held a meeting to let people in the community know about the effort. The rest, as they say, is history.
The Friends with Flowers program just entered its 10th year proving flowers to patients served by Bluegrass Hospice Care in Scott County. The group boasts a core of volunteers who have served for years, and, as word gets out, add new people to their mission. Volunteers work with local funeral homes and area Kroger stores for donated flowers, then meet weekly to make arrangements for delivery to patients. In total, Friends with Flowers has delivered more than 10,000 arrangements to very appreciative patients, their families and caregivers and the volunteers have donated more than 5,000 hours of their time toward the effort.
