Linen soiled with body fluids is a possible source of infection. Linen soiled with body fluid should be washed with warm water and detergent. Avoid contact of your body and clothing with soiled items. Avoid placing linens on the floor, whenever possible. Gloves should be worn when handling soiled laundry. Soiled linen should be handled as little as possible. 



  • Household disinfectant (Lysol concentrate)
  • Washing machine

  • Gloves

  • Detergent

  • Disposable apron


1. Wear gloves when handling soiled linen or clothing.

2. If laundry area is not adjacent to patient care area, carry soiled laundry to laundry area. It may be necessary to place linen in a plastic bag when transporting laundry to another area.

3.  Wash linen and clothing soiled with body fluids separately from other household laundry.

4.  If the washing machine needs to be cleaned after washing the soiled laundry, the machine can be run empty using a cup of bleach.
